Saratoga ranks among the most expensive housing markets, both in California and in the United States. It is considered one of the most-educated small towns as well as one of the top-earning towns. Saratoga incorporated in 1956 with the slogan to "Keep it rural." Today, Saratoga has a zoning code aimed at preserving a semi-rural appearance. The community emphasizes its semi-rural appearance by foregoing street lights and sidewalks on most residential streets.
Within its borders, Saratoga includes lush redwood forests, foothills suitable for wine grapes, and a sunny valley floor covered with suburban homes. The semi-rural bent, in addition to the excellent schools, causes Saratoga to have high housing costs. Today the city serves as a bedroom community for upper-middle class Silicon Valley tech workers.
